Sal Like Protein 1 (SALL1)
SALL1 acted as a strong transcriptional repressor which could not be relieved by the addition of the histone deacetylase inhibitor trichostatin A. Using a yeast 2-hybrid screen, PIN2, an isoform of telomere repeat-binding factor 1 (TERF1), was identified as an interaction partner of SALL1. The interaction was confirmed in vitro in a GST pull-down assay. The authors proposed an involvement of SALL1 in the regulation of higher order chromatin structures and hypothesized that the protein may be a component of a distinct heterochromatin-dependent silencing process.SALL1 gene is expressed in a subset of human tissues, with highest expression in kidney, brain, and liver. SALL1 and SALL2 are expressed in different areas of the fetal brain, probably in distinct sets of neurons.
