The deduced 690-amino acid SLC34A2 protein is a type 2 phosphate transporter. It contains 8 predicted transmembrane domains and a cysteine-rich N-terminal region. SLC34A2 shares 78% amino acid identity with the mouse sodium-dependent phosphate transporter IIb.
Functional studies showed that SLC34A2 is a sodium-dependent phosphate transporter that is strongly sensitive to pH, with phosphate uptake increased at more acidic pH. Northern blot analysis detected a 4.2-kb SLC34A2 transcript in several human tissues of epithelial origin; kidney also contained high levels of a 2.4-kb transcript. SLC34A2 was most abundantly expressed in lung, with moderate expression in kidney, pancreas, and prostate.
