Spindle Pole Body Component Protein 24 (SPC24)

SPBC24; NDC80 Kinetochore Complex Component; Kinetochore protein Spc24

Spindle Pole Body Component Protein 24 (SPC24)
SPBC24 associates with kinetochores from prometaphase through anaphase. Transfection of HeLa cells with siRNA targeted against SPBC24 caused mitotic arrest followed by cell death. In addition, SPBC24 siRNA-treated cells showed a distribution of chromosomes over the mitotic spindle and a significantly longer spindle pole-to-pole distance, showing that SPBC24 is required for normal chromosome congression. The process of chromosome segregation during mitosis is regulated in part by the kinetochores, which assemble at centromeres, form attachments with microtubules and relevant proteins, and function in the spindle checkpoint. The NDC80 complex is a central kinetochore protein complex that is important for chromosome congression and spindle checkpoint signaling.
