Thioredoxin 2, Mitochondrial (TXN2)

Thioredoxin, mitochondrial is a mitochondrial member of the thioredoxin family, a group of small multifunctional redox-active proteins. The encoded protein may play important roles in the regulation of the mitochondrial membrane potential and in protection against oxidant-induced apoptosis.

Spyrou et al. (1997) cloned rat Trx2. The deduced protein contains a mitochondrial targeting sequence and a thioredoxin active site. Northern blot analysis detected highest expression in rat heart, muscle, kidney, and adrenal gland. Western blot analysis detected Trx2 in the mitochondrial fraction of fractionated rat liver. Northern blot analysis detected TRX2 transcripts of about 1.3 and 1.0 kb in all tissues examined, with highest expression in heart, skeletal muscle, kidney, and liver.
