Zinc finger protein 165 belongs to a subfamily of Kruppel proteins that have a 67-amino acid SCAN box and lack the A and B domains of the Kruppel-associated box (KRAB). Members of this DNA-binding protein family act as transcriptional regulators. This gene is located within a cluster of zinc finger family members.
The encoded protein may play a role in spermatogenesis. The complete cDNA encodes a predicted 475-amino acid protein with an N-terminal acidic domain containing 17% aspartic and glutamic acid residues and a C-terminal domain with 5 zinc finger motifs. Northern blots identified a 2.2-kb transcript specific to the testis. The gene was mapped to chromosome 6 by hybridization to a panel of somatic cell hybrid DNAs and was regionalized to 6p21 by fluorescence in situ hybridization.
