Mucin 5 Subtype AC (MUC5AC)

MUC5AC is a secreted mucin aberrantly expressed by polypoid colorectal adenomas. It has been hypothesised that the "normal" surrounding colorectal mucosa expresses MUC5AC as a field change phenomenon that can be used to predict adenoma recurrence following resection.Mucins are high molecular mass, highly glycosylated macromolecules that are the major components of mucus secretions. MUC5B is a salivary mucin that is thought to contribute to the lubricating and viscoelastic properties of whole saliva. It is composed of 14.9% protein, 78.1% carbohydrate, and 7% sulfate. Sequence Note: The RefSeq transcript and protein were derived from genomic sequence to make the sequence consistent with the reference genome assembly. The genomic coordinates used for the transcript record were based on alignments.
